It's Monday! What Are You Reading? 2/11/13

It's Monday! What are you Reading? is a meme hosted by Sheila at Book Journeys. I heard about it from the Teach Mentor Texts blog, which puts a "Picture Books to YA" twist on it. I like to post my MG/YA, adult, and professional reads here!

Last Week I Dived Into...
One for the Murphys by Lynda Mullaly Hunt. SO well written. I couldn't put it down.

Mercury by Hope Larson...last week I read her adaptation of A Wrinkle in Time into graphic novel format, and I was mesmerized by the way she illustrated emotions and some (seemingly) intangible moments in that story. She had the same touch with Mercury. I was happy to find a graphic novel that's not too baby-ish for my middle schoolers, also.

Friends with Boys by Faith Erin Hicks...On my search for more graphic novel recommendations, I came across this one at the library. I really loved Hicks's illustrations. Another good addition to the graphic novel section of my classroom library.

Level Up by Gene Luen Yang...I read his other work, American Born Chinese this summer, and that is still my favorite graphic novel of his.

This Week I'm Diving Into...
Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card as part of the #bookgapchallenge. As a YA sci-fi nerd, I am ashamed to admit I have never read this pivotal book. This is being remedied.

I am about 60 pages into Faithful Place by Tana French. I need a snow day so I can just sit and read this one.

Last week's post: Professionally, I WILL FINISH Pathways to the Common Core: Accelerating Achievement by Lucy Calkins (if it's in caps, it has to happen). Then it's on to Peter Johnston's Choice Words.

Update: Typing that into CAPS did not work. But I made PROGRESS. That's the most important thing, right?

What are you getting into this week?
Happy Reading!

I read One For the Murphys this summer, and I absolutely loved it!!
Faith Erin Hicks was so cute when I met her at NCTE. She said that many of the houses were drawn based on houses from her hometown in Canada.

I haven't read One for the Murphy's yet but I really want to! I loved Friends with Boys. The characters were great. Faith Erin Hicks is super nice. Hooray for Pathways. Chris Lehman is such a great resource if you don't already follow him on Twitter. He also write Energize, a book about research that is excellent!
